You can add a little context to help focus your reading.

Missing your ex is normal, including when you were the one who ended it, and on its own it doesn't mean you should go back. When you think "I miss my ex," you're usually missing one of three things: the person, the relationship you had with them, or who you were back then. Work out which one, and the feeling gets easier to carry. You'll also know whether there's anything to do about it tonight. Usually there isn't.

Why do I miss my ex so much?

Because they filled particular places in your day, and those places are still there. The missing tends to hit at the exact moments they used to fill: the walk home, Sunday mornings, the second you get good news and reach for your phone to tell them. A song, a street or a smell can do it too. That's why it comes in waves instead of a steady ache, and why a wave can arrive on a day you thought you were fine.

It's often strongest at night, when the day's distractions are gone and the quiet still feels like the two of you.

What exactly are you missing?

You might be missing… You'll notice it when… What helps
The person You think of things only they did: their laugh, how they said your name, how they handled your bad days Letting yourself feel it. It's grief for someone specific, and it softens with time
The relationship You miss having someone to text at lunch, a plus-one, being somebody's first call Rebuilding those parts of life with friends and family, so the gap isn't waiting on one person
Who you were then The memories are mostly about a place, an age or a phase of life, and they happen to be in it Asking what you liked about that version of you, and what of it you can bring back on your own

Whether you miss your ex-girlfriend or your ex-boyfriend, the question is the same: which of the three is loudest? Most people find a mix, with one in front. If it's mainly the relationship or your old self, contacting your ex probably won't give you what you're missing.

I miss my ex, but I'm the one who ended it

That's very common, and it doesn't mean you were wrong. Choosing to leave and losing something are both true at once. You can be sure about the decision and still miss the good parts. Before the next wave, write down why you ended it, in your own words, and read it when you need to. The missing sits next to your reasons. It doesn't cancel them.

Should I tell my ex I miss them?

Not in the moment the feeling hits. Wait a day, then ask what you'd want them to do with the message. If the honest answer is "come back," that's a much bigger decision than a text. If it's "say it back," you're asking them to soothe a feeling that's yours to carry. Should I text my ex? walks through that choice before you hit send.

Whether they miss you too is a separate question, covered in does my ex miss me?

What to do when you miss your ex at night

  1. Name which of the three it is. The person, the relationship or your old self. Naming it takes some of the heat out.
  2. Write the message in your notes app, not to them. Say everything. Read it again in the morning.
  3. Do the thing they used to do for you. If you wanted to share news, tell a friend. If you wanted company, call someone.
  4. Put the phone across the room. The missing is easier to sit with than a 1 a.m. conversation you'll regret.
  5. Decide tomorrow. Give yourself a set time in daylight to think about whether anything needs to happen. By then, most nights, nothing does.

What the I Ching says about missing someone

The I Ching has a precise picture of a mind that keeps reaching toward one person. The fourth line of Hexagram 31, Influence, in Richard Wilhelm's The I Ching or Book of Changes, rendered into English by Cary F. Baynes, reads: "If a man is agitated in mind, and his thoughts go hither and thither, only those friends on whom he fixes his conscious thoughts will follow." Missing that runs back and forth like this keeps your whole world fixed on one person, and everyone else drifts to the edges. The same line opens with "Perseverance brings good fortune": steadiness in yourself is what lets the restlessness settle.

Hexagram 61, Inner Truth, describes the mood swings honestly. Its third line, in my translation: "Upon meeting the enemy, sometimes he beats the drum to advance, sometimes he stops; sometimes he weeps, sometimes he sings." The Chinese word rendered "enemy" also means a match or counterpart, and the line describes someone whose moods rise and fall with another person. If one day you're fine and the next you're crying over an old photo, that's this line. It says nothing about what your ex feels. It shows how much of your balance is resting on them.

To ask a reading about this, skip "does he miss me?" and ask about your side: "What is this missing pointing me toward?" or "What do I need right now that I've been looking for in them?" The changing lines usually point straight at the gap.

If the missing hasn't eased in months and you keep circling back, why can't I get over my ex? looks at what keeps it going.

FAQ

Is it normal to miss my ex? Yes, and it can last a while, coming in waves. Missing someone shows they mattered to you. It doesn't mean you should get back together.

Why do I miss my ex so much even though I ended it? Because leaving and losing are both true. You can be sure the relationship had to end and still miss the person, the routine or who you were with them. Writing down why you ended it helps when a wave hits.

Should I tell my ex I miss them? Not in the moment. Wait a day and ask what you'd want them to do with that message. If you want them back, that's a bigger decision than a text. If you want comfort, look for it from someone who can give it now.
