An example I Ching reading, step by step
This is a real reading from Ask Yi, from the question to the answer. The question is a demo we wrote for this page; it isn't from a user.
The question
Your questionWhat's a wise next step in this relationship?
It asks about a next step you can take, not about what the other person feels or whether things will work out. A reading can describe a situation and its direction; it can't look inside someone else's head. More in how to ask the I Ching a good question.
The cast
Three coins, six tosses, built from the bottom up. Heads count 3, tails 2, so each total comes from one mix of heads and tails.
| Line | Coins | Total | Line | Changing? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 (top) | 2 heads, 1 tail | 8 | Yin (broken) | No |
| 5 | 3 heads | 9 | Yang (solid) | Yes, becomes yin |
| 4 | 2 heads, 1 tail | 8 | Yin (broken) | No |
| 3 | 2 heads, 1 tail | 8 | Yin (broken) | No |
| 2 | 3 tails | 6 | Yin (broken) | Yes, becomes yang |
| 1 (bottom) | 1 head, 2 tails | 7 | Yang (solid) | No |
The hexagrams
- Primary hexagram: Hexagram 3, Difficulty at the Beginning (屯), the situation now.
- Changing lines: line 2 and line 5.
- Resulting hexagram: Hexagram 19, Approach (临), where it's heading.
The texts the reading works from, translated from the Chinese by manpo:
Hexagram 3, Judgment
元亨,利贞。勿用有攸往。利建侯
“Great success and favorable to be upright. Do not undertake anything right now. It is beneficial to establish strong leadership (set up a worthy leader).”
Line 2
屯如,邅如。乘马班如,匪寇婚媾;女子贞不字,十年乃字。
“Blocked and hesitant. A team of horsemen lingers, but they are not bandits—they are a wedding procession. The young woman stays chaste and does not wed; only after ten years does she marry.”
Line 5
屯其膏。小,贞吉;大,贞凶。
“Accumulating fat (resources) amid difficulty. For one who is small and gentle, steadfastness brings good fortune; for one who is strong and great, steadfastness guards against misfortune.”
Hexagram 19, Judgment
元亨,利贞;至于八月有凶。
“Great success, favorable to be upright; by the eighth month, misfortune.”
The reading
Exactly as Ask Yi gave it.
The primary hexagram suggests a time of potential and smooth progress, but patience is required before taking action. Line 2 indicates a situation where progress seems stalled, yet the underlying intention is positive, advising patience and virtuous endurance. Line 5 confirms that once initial difficulties are overcome, benefits should be shared widely to ensure stability and guard against misfortune.
Your question about the next step in this relationship aligns with a phase of early potential, where the path forward feels uncertain or delayed. The primary hexagram advises that while the foundation is strong, rushing could disrupt the natural unfolding. Line 2 reflects a period of lingering or hesitation, yet the intent remains positive, suggesting that patience and maintaining your principles will lead to a favorable outcome. Line 5 reinforces that once the initial hurdles are cleared, sharing your intentions and values openly will solidify the connection and prevent future misunderstandings.
Why This Result
Interpret line 2 first as the primary focus, then line 5 as a balancing factor, with brief references to the primary and result hexagram judgments.
Focus on patience and maintaining your integrity during this period of uncertainty, as the situation may require time to align with your intentions.
Once the initial resistance eases, openly share your commitments and values to strengthen trust and ensure mutual understanding.
Avoid forcing progress, as the timing for meaningful development may not yet be right, but remain steadfast in your principles.
The logic behind this result
- Two lines change, and they are lines 2 and 5. These are the middle lines of the lower and upper trigrams, the two positions the tradition gives the most weight.
- When both change, the one that fits the question leads. Line 2 speaks to your own position; line 5 to the wider situation and the other person. The question asks about your next step, so line 2 comes first and line 5 balances it. That is what Why This Result says.
- Lines 2 and 5 aren't next to each other, so they describe two sides of the situation rather than one sequence: line 2 is where things stand now (slow, hesitant, not to be forced), and line 5 is how to act once things open up.
- Hexagram 3 sets the scene: a beginning that is hard going, and a judgment that advises not pushing ahead yet.
- Hexagram 19, Approach, shows the direction: drawing closer. Its judgment also warns that a good stretch can turn (“by the eighth month, misfortune”). The reading touches both judgments only briefly and builds on the two lines.
The general rules for every reading are on the home page under How it works.
What this reading can and can't tell you
It describes where this relationship stands and suggests a next step worth taking. It doesn't say what the other person feels or how things will end; that part is still up to the two of you.
