Does He Love Me? How to Read What He Actually Does
Whether he loves you shows in what he does over months: plans that include you, promises kept, showing up on bad days and repairing after fights. If you can't see that yet, ask the I Ching about the state of the relationship rather than his mind.

If you're asking "does he love me?", look at what he does over months, not at what he says on one good night. Love shows up as steady effort: he keeps showing up when it's inconvenient, he makes room for you in his plans, and he's the same person on a dull Tuesday as on a date. If you see that pattern, you probably have your answer. If you can't see it yet, the more useful question is what's actually happening between you.
Is it love, or does he just like being with you?
Liking is about how he feels when you're together. Love is about what he's willing to carry when you're not. Someone can enjoy your company, find you attractive and text you every day without having made any room for you in his life. Comfort is a third thing: a relationship can become a habit, warm and familiar, with very little choosing left in it.
The three can look the same in a single week. They separate over time. Liking fades when it gets inconvenient, comfort carries on without effort, and love keeps making the effort.
What love looks like in what he does
- He plans with you in it. Holidays, a friend's wedding next month, where he might live next year. You come up without being asked.
- He follows through. If he says he'll call, he calls. Small promises kept matter more than big ones made.
- He's there on bad days. When you're ill, stressed or hard to be around, he moves closer rather than vanishing until you're fun again.
- He lets you into his life. You've met the people who matter to him, and he talks to you about the things that worry him, not only the things that impress.
- He repairs. After a fight he comes back to it, even clumsily, instead of letting it disappear.
None of these needs a big gesture. They need consistency, which is why one weekend can't show you love and a season usually can.
What doesn't tell you much
Intensity early on, grand declarations, jealousy, how fast he replies, and how good the good moments feel. These are easy to read as proof because they're vivid. They're weak evidence because they cost little. Some deeply loving people are slow texters, and some charming ones say "I love you" in week two and are gone by week ten.
If you're doing all the planning, all the reaching out and all the repairing, that's information too, even if he's warm when you're together.
How to ask the I Ching "does he love me?"
Asked word for word, the question gives a reading nothing to describe, because it points at the one place no one can look: the inside of his head. Turn it toward the relationship you can both see:
- "What is the real state of things between us right now?"
- "What is he putting into this relationship?"
- "What would help this grow, if it's meant to?"
When you cast on Ask Yi, the reading takes the question you write, describes the situation in plain English and shows the reasoning step by step, so you can check it against what you've actually seen. More on phrasing is in how to ask the I Ching a good question.
Two hexagrams come up often in readings like this. Hexagram 32, Persevering, is about love as something that lasts. In my translation its judgement says that "having a goal or direction will be advantageous", and its image, in Richard Wilhelm's The I Ching or Book of Changes (English by Cary F. Baynes), is "Thunder and wind: the image of Duration. Thus the superior man stands firm and does not change his direction." Its first line warns that "Overdoing constancy brings misfortune": pushing for a deep commitment before the connection has had time to set. If it comes up, the reading is asking you to watch the direction he keeps choosing rather than demand proof.
Hexagram 61, Center Returning, is about sincerity that answers sincerity. Its second line, in my translation: "A crane calls from the shade, its young answers it; I have good wine, I share it with you." It describes two people who call and answer each other without performance. If this line appears, ask yourself honestly whether he answers when you call, in the plain everyday sense.
What to do with the answer
If the reading and his behavior both point to steady effort, stop testing him. Repeated tests wear down exactly the thing you're trying to measure.
If they point to an imbalance, say what you need in one sentence, without accusation: "I'd like us to make plans further ahead than this weekend." How he responds over the next few weeks tells you more than his first reaction.
If you've been asking this question for a long time and nothing changes, the more useful question may be what you want, whatever he feels.
If your question is really something else
"Does he love me?" often hides a nearby question. If you're early on and wondering whether he's interested at all, read does he like me?. If you want to know how much he cares right now, after distance or a fight, see does he care about me?. If you're stuck on what's going through his mind after a message or a silence, try what is he thinking?. And if you're already sure of his feelings and wondering about a future together, is he the one? looks at that.
FAQ
Can the I Ching tell me if he loves me?
Not directly. It can't see his feelings. It can describe the state of the relationship and what each of you is putting into it, which is usually what decides the question.
How do I know if he loves me or just likes me?
Watch what happens when being with you is inconvenient. Liking shows up when things are easy; love keeps showing up, makes plans that include you, and comes back to repair things after a fight.
How should I phrase a question about his feelings?
Ask about the relationship rather than his mind, for example "What is the real state of things between us?" or "What is he putting into this relationship?" A reading can describe a situation; it can't read a heart.
